Position Overview:

The General Assistant II will be responsible for maintaining the university’s gardens, sports fields, and outdoor spaces. Duties include groundskeeping, pitch preparation, equipment maintenance, and supporting the broader facilities team to ensure a clean, safe, and functional outdoor environment for students and staff.


Key Responsibilities:

Gardens & Lawns:

  • Mow, plant, fertilize, and maintain lawns and turf.
  • Operate garden equipment including mowers, sprayers, leaf blowers, and trimmers.
  • Prune shrubs, remove debris, sweep walkways, and empty trash bins.
  • Maintain sidewalks, parking areas, fountains, and planters.
  • Prepare and maintain sports pitches (e.g. cricket) to professional standards.

Plant & Horticultural Care:

  • Water, prune, and fertilize plants and shrubs.
  • Maintain garden nurseries and specialty gardens.
  • Apply insecticides and manage pests.
  • Use irrigation systems and watering tools to sustain plant health.

Tools & Equipment Maintenance:

  • Perform basic repairs and adjustments to garden tools and machinery.
  • Assist in marking and preparing sports fields.
  • Install and maintain irrigation systems and ground equipment.

Landscaping:

  • Follow landscape designs to plant and shape outdoor areas.
  • Create garden borders and decorative features using cement.
  • Provide landscaping advice and ensure aesthetic upkeep of grounds.

Health, Safety & Housekeeping:

  • Safely handle tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Clean work areas and manage waste.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and wear appropriate protective gear.
  • Maintain overall cleanliness and safety of the outdoor work environment.

UJ Policy & Culture:

  • Uphold the university’s values and comply with all institutional policies.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience, particularly in cricket pitch maintenance and groundskeeping

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A valid Code 8 driver’s license
