Position Overview:
UJ is seeking a dedicated and skilled General Assistant II to join the Gardens, Grounds, and Sports Fields team. This role involves maintaining sports fields, gardens, and campus grounds, ensuring all facilities are in excellent condition, especially for sports activities like cricket. The ideal candidate should be physically fit, reliable, and experienced in groundskeeping and pitch preparation.
Key Responsibilities:
Grounds & Lawn Maintenance
- Mow and fertilise lawns and sports fields
- Plant, cultivate, and care for turf and grassy areas
- Operate equipment such as lawnmowers, leaf blowers, sprayers, and power tools
- Rake leaves, sweep paths, and remove debris
- Prune shrubs and trees, remove dead/diseased branches
- Maintain and clean walkways, parking areas, fountains, and planters
- Prepare cricket pitches and sports fields for use
Plant Care
- Prune, water, and fertilise plants and hedges
- Maintain garden beds and nursery areas
- Apply pesticides to manage pests
- Operate irrigation systems
Tool & Equipment Maintenance
- Perform minor repairs on garden tools and machines
- Assist with setting up and marking sports fields
- Help with the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems
- Maintain and clean storage areas
Landscaping
- Follow landscaping plans to plant grass, flowers, and foliage
- Mix and pour concrete for garden borders
- Enhance campus aesthetics through planting and design
Health & Safety
- Follow safe practices when handling equipment and tools
- Maintain cleanliness of workspaces
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Adhere to UJ’s health and environmental safety standards
Compliance
- Perform duties in accordance with UJ policies and uphold the institution’s values
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in general maintenance and cricket pitch preparation
Recommendations:
- Valid Code 8 Driver’s License
