General Manager at Zeal HR

Our client, a prominent player in the Logistics sector, is in search of a General Manager to lead one of their Business Units within the Transport division. The ideal candidate should possess experience in the container transport industry.

Responsibilities:

As the General Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the entire company’s transport function, managing both own trucks and subcontractors. The primary objective is to maximize profit while upholding exceptional service levels.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Overall Accountability for Own Truck Profit & Utilization:
    • Schedule truck services with the workshop in line with operational requirements and driver availability.
    • Coordinate truck maintenance according to manufacturer guidelines and workshop requirements.
    • Proactively monitor reports to identify trends and take corrective action.
    • Report on truck and driver performance, ensuring enough drivers are available to minimize downtime.
    • Manage route/load planning and backloads to maximize profit and minimize empty legs.
  2. Contracting and Managing of Subcontractors (LMA):
    • Implement and manage relevant procedures for all staff.
    • Oversee health and safety, staff management, and well-being.
    • Lead Bargaining Council negotiations.
    • Plan and budget staff according to seasonal requirements.
    • Develop staff to improve overall competencies.
    • Ensure compliance with company values, policies, and practices.
    • Manage business development initiatives and contribute to decision-making for unit growth.
  3. Total Transport Function Budget Management:
    • Provide input for the transport function budget.
    • Manage and deliver according to the approved budget, maximizing profit through efficient income and expense management.
    • Ensure accurate invoicing, cost recovery, and cost management.
    • Prioritize allocation to subcontractors for the best margin on loads.
  4. Smooth Running of Transport Services and Staff:
    • Set clear, measurable goals and regularly measure and report on them.
    • Ensure staff is supported in finding solutions for operational problems.
    • Plan, allocate, and execute all loads daily, reporting on execution accuracy.
    • Monitor load tracking and progress reporting within agreed service levels.
  5. Capacity Management and Rate Setting:
    • Ensure sufficient capacity through subcontractors and own trucks at competitive rates.
    • Match subcontractor fleet to seasonal requirements and contract with new subcontractors as needed.
    • Set transport rates, compile quotes, and maintain rates sheets for all regular routes.
  6. System and App Usage and Data Integrity:
    • Ensure high-level system and app usage for both own trucks and subcontractors.
    • Monitor compliance with systems, processes, and procedures.
    • Influence the implementation of new procedures based on industry trends.

Desired Experience & Qualifications:

  • Financial-related qualification.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in Cash Management/Treasury.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in creditors or in an operational finance role.
  • Ability to explain transactions using T-Accounts.
  • Basic understanding of Exchange control regulations in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Countries (Adv).
  • Proficiency in SAP ERP (Adv) and CargoWise1 (Adv).
