Job Description
UJ is seeking Security Officers for various campuses to ensure the protection, safety, and security of university assets, staff, students, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Security Services:
- Conduct patrols to safeguard university property, staff, and students.
- Enforce access control and ensure compliance with security policies.
- Monitor security infrastructure (gates, streetlights, burglar proofing) and report any faults.
- Identify and respond to security incidents and emergencies.
- Secure crime scenes until supervisors arrive.
- Complete and maintain incident reports and documentation.
- Monitor and operate security systems as needed.
- Assist with preliminary investigations into reported offenses.
- Provide escort services for staff at night.
- Conduct bag and vehicle searches as per security protocols.
- Maintain an administrative system for lost and found items.
Access Control:
- Perform and enforce UJ’s access control procedures.
- Verify student, staff, and visitor permits, as well as vehicle and work permits.
- Conduct security screening of personnel, bags, and vehicles.
- Secure gates and doors after hours.
Customer Service:
- Provide friendly, professional, and effective security services.
- Assist with event security on special occasions (e.g., open days, public events).
- Maintain a professional appearance and conduct at all times.
- Foster a service excellence culture and handle feedback appropriately.
Health & Safety:
- Act as first responder in emergency situations such as fires or medical incidents.
- Operate and maintain security and protective equipment.
- Report faulty equipment to senior personnel.
Professional Development:
- Participate in training programs as required.
- Follow guidance from senior personnel and continuously improve skills.
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 / Matric / NQF4 qualification.
- Valid Grade C PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority) registration.
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
- Clean criminal record (verified by SAPS clearance).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Minimum 2 years’ security experience.
- Must meet medical, psychological, and physical fitness requirements.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience (Advantageous):
- NQF5 qualification or higher.
- Experience with electronic access control and video management systems.
- Previous experience in campus, corporate, or educational security.
- Professional Driver’s Permit (PDP).
- Higher PSIRA accreditation (e.g., Grade A or B, Armed Response, Special Events Security).
- Valid SAPS firearm competency certificate.
- Training or experience in firefighting and first aid.
Working Conditions:
- Shift-based work (24/7/365, including weekends and public holidays).
- Travel between different university sites may be required.
- Must wear a uniform and work in all weather conditions.
- Firearm handling may be required, subject to operational needs.
Screening Process:
All shortlisted candidates will undergo:
- Background checks (MIE, SAPS, SSA).
- Medical evaluations.
- Polygraph testing.
- Psychometric and physical fitness assessments.
