Comprehensive Job Description
The individual in this role will be responsible for selecting and assembling the appropriate equipment to electronically capture video/stills and record audio while maintaining picture quality according to the channel’s broadcast standards.
Primary Responsibilities
Filming:
- Film news events and record audio material for editing and packaging into news broadcasts.
- Collaborate with the Input Editor or reporter assigned to the story to plan and develop the visual presentation.
- Apply principles of visual storytelling with aesthetically pleasing and technically correct compositions, angles, and camera movements, ensuring correct exposure and color saturation.
- Use lighting and sound recording techniques in accordance with broadcast standards.
- Conduct onsite interviews by asking probing questions aligned with the story brief.
- Be prepared to perform live crossings in front of the camera when necessary, including in situations without a reporter.
- Occasionally operate in a multi-camera environment, live or prerecorded, and manage outside broadcasts.
Live Events/Outside Broadcast:
- Film live events using Live U or other live equipment.
- Ensure steady and controlled camera movements while filming live events per broadcast standards and guidelines.
- Set up the camera promptly and be ready to stream visuals as required.
- Flag any potential technical problems in a timely manner.
Editing:
- Edit video and audio news stories filmed on location.
- Deliver edited and/or raw materials from locations to the studio or bureaus as instructed.
- Edit to script and voice stories when required (only in extreme cases for those working from bureaus).
Maintenance:
- Maintain the ENG kit assigned and perform necessary camera checks to ensure it is in working condition for the shoot.
- Test all cables, including LiveU cables, before leaving the office.
- Keep equipment and vehicles clean at all times and report any faults.
Qualifications:
- National Diploma in Film and Television and/or Broadcasting
Experience:
- 3 years as an ENG Camera Operator in a Live Broadcast
- Driver’s License – Essential
Language:
- English – Intermediate
