Employee Relations & Wellness Administrator – University of Johannesburg

Role Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Employee Relations (ER) & Wellness Administrator to support the ER & Wellness Director in implementing HR strategies and ensuring the smooth execution of employment relations and wellness initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Dispute Resolution & CCMA Representation:

  • Represent UJ in CCMA conciliations and arbitrations.
  • Evaluate disputes, prepare objections, and oppose condonation applications.
  • Coordinate pre-arbitration meetings, compile minutes, and obtain relevant evidence.
  • Research case law to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Prepare employer bundles and brief legal counsel.
  • Monitor implementation of Arbitration Awards and handle review applications.

Collective Bargaining & Union Relations:

  • Manage and coordinate the Collective Bargaining Forum (CBF), setting schedules and overseeing documentation.
  • Maintain records of proceedings and manage all CBF interventions and training.
  • Organize trade union-related activities and bilateral meetings.
  • Oversee implementation of agreements, including those with NEHAWU.

Employee Relations & Disciplinary Management:

  • Ensure effective handling of disciplinary, grievance, and incapacity matters.
  • Monitor trends in labour law compliance and provide guidance to line managers.
  • Collect and evaluate evidence, reports, and conditions of service for case resolution.
  • Maintain an up-to-date disciplinary records system.

Incapacity Forum & Health Management:

  • Oversee incapacity cases and coordinate ill-health management processes.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and best practices.
  • Maintain records and distribute relevant documentation.

Training & Development:

  • Develop and facilitate ER training programs for executives, line managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct training on conflict resolution, grievance procedures, and disciplinary processes.
  • Support policy awareness and compliance across different UJ campuses.

Stakeholder Relations & Policy Development:

  • Build partnerships with HCM teams, trade unions, and external stakeholders.
  • Provide expert guidance on employment policies and legal compliance.
  • Identify gaps in UJ policies, draft new frameworks, and ensure adherence to labour laws.

Governance, Risk & Strategic Projects:

  • Maintain an effective record-keeping system with proper backups.
  • Prepare and submit reports and presentations to the ER Forum.
  • Support policy review processes and contribute to strategic ER initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Labour Law, Human Resources, or BTech (NQF 7).
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience, including CCMA arbitration representation.
  • Experience in facilitating ER training.
  • In-depth knowledge of South African labour laws and employment relations practices.
  • Experience in the Higher Education sector is an advantage.
