Introduction
The U.S. Embassy in Pretoria is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Warehouse Worker (Truck Driver) in the General Services Office (GSO) section.
Duties & Responsibilities
Basic Function of the Position This position involves safely and efficiently operating U.S. Government-owned or leased trucks and other large cargo vehicles. The incumbent is responsible for the safe handling, transportation, and storage of both expendable and non-expendable items. This role is under the supervision of the Warehouse Manager in the General Services Office and supports medium-sized posts without a Property Supervisor.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Driving and Transportation (60%)
- Operate U.S. Government-owned or leased vehicles, including heavy and light-duty trucks, pick-up trucks, vans, and cargo vans, to transport items between the warehouse, office buildings, residential properties, and other locations.
- Use forklifts, pallet jacks, dollies, trolleys, and other material handling equipment to move supplies to and from storage areas.
- Clean, polish, and inspect vehicles before and after operation, ensuring they are in serviceable condition. Report vehicle deficiencies to the supervisor and perform minor maintenance repairs as needed.
- Handle cash up to $1,000 and manage a government fuel credit card with a $300 limit.
Warehouse Operations and Maintenance (20%)
- Load and unload expendable and non-expendable items, including furniture and appliances, from trucks/vans to the warehouse.
- Assist in organizing, preparing, and delivering items from the warehouse to various locations.
- Assemble, dismantle, or move furniture and appliances as needed without causing damage.
- Assist in packing, unpacking, and delivering welcome kits for new arrivals.
- Organize and distribute expendable supplies to customers and various sections.
- Oversee the loading and unloading of trucks to ensure safe driving and prevent damage to Embassy property.
- Assist in moving and storing items and maintaining storage spaces.
Inventory (10%)
- Assist with warehouse inventory to ensure proper storage, prevent theft, and identify safety or fire hazards.
- Conduct individual inventories of residences and inspect items to ensure no theft or damage to Embassy property.
- Identify and report damaged or missing items for replacement.
- Assist in moving and storing items and maintaining storage spaces.
Other Duties (10%)
- Provide manual assistance during visits and events, including setting up control rooms, safeguarding property, and tracking items and equipment.
- Escort visitors, outside contractors, and non-cleared employees as required.
- Perform manual labor assistance for any section or office as directed by the supervisor.

Desired Experience & Qualification
Education:
- Completion of high school education is required.
Prior Work Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional truck or heavy vehicle driving experience.
- One (1) year of experience in manual labor or warehouse work.
Language Proficiency:
- English: Limited knowledge (Reading/Writing/Speaking).
- Any of the 12 local languages: Good working knowledge (Reading/Writing/Speaking).
Job Knowledge:
- Good understanding of warehouse operations, procedures, safety, and security standards.
- Knowledge of warehouse storage space maintenance and efficient usage.
- Ability to conduct inventory and stack items/equipment properly.
- Familiarity with local traffic laws and in-country travel routes.
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to load and unload heavy objects efficiently and lift up to 51 lbs. (23 kg) according to OSHA standards.
- Proficient in using warehouse tools and operating equipment such as forklifts and electronic lifters safely.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance and basic automotive repairs, detect vehicle defects, and report them immediately.
- Capability to work in various weather conditions, including severe cold, extreme heat, wet or dry weather, and high winds.
- Must hold a valid heavy vehicle driver’s license and PDP.
Package & Remuneration
Basic Salary: R 213,755.00 to R299,258.00 per annum
Non-cash Benefits:
- Medical aid (Discovery Medical Aid) – 70% contribution by the U.S. Embassy.
- Annual leave starting at 17 days, increasing with years of service.
- Eligibility for both SA and USA public holidays.
- Provident Fund – 10.9% employer contribution.
