Purpose of the Role:

The Artisan Welder will be responsible for welding and fabrication-related maintenance and repairs across six Network Regions. This includes five EM Depots, as well as the Telemetry, Metering, Minor Plant, Electrical sections, Reservoir sites, and Sewer Pump Stations. The role also involves manufacturing both standard and custom reticulation components in the Welding Workshop while ensuring compliance with OHASA and SANS codes of practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately complete and submit work orders, check sheets, and overtime sheets before the end of each shift.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections, maintain logbooks, and submit them weekly to the Foreman.
  • Submit all petrol slips monthly as per Johannesburg Water’s Vehicle Policy.
  • Perform duties with minimal supervision and oversee subordinates to meet departmental goals.
  • Provide daily job updates to the Foreman, ensuring work is completed within set timeframes.
  • Promote and ensure workplace safety following OHASA and Johannesburg Water codes of practice.
  • Conduct daily inspections of welding equipment and report defects to the Workshop Foreman.
  • Assess work sites for potential hazards before commencing work, including excavations and confined spaces.
  • Manufacture, repair, and install various components for regional departments, including Y-pieces, T-pieces, collars, spool pieces, manhole covers, step ladders, burst pipe clamps, and locking devices.
  • Execute repairs on water and sewer reticulation systems across all regions as required.
  • Assist contractors on network sites and take over work when directed by the Mechanical Manager.
  • Modify plant and equipment, such as fuel tanks, trailer chassis, battery brackets, and water tanks.
  • Handle rigging and lifting of heavy pipes and water reticulation components.
  • Inspect and oversee excavations for repairs.
  • Provide guidance on best practices for on-site operations.
  • Participate in standby duties, overtime, and emergency response as per the collective agreement.
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns and emergencies involving plant, equipment, and reticulation systems.
  • Assist with pre-planning of materials, resources, and equipment for scheduled operations.
  • Support effective and productive section planning.
  • Conduct monthly toolbox and tool inspections.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

  • Grade 10 or N1 (NQF Level 2) with a Welder Trade Test Certificate OR an appropriate NQF 4 Learnership.
  • At least three years of experience in welding operations, particularly focusing on large-diameter pipelines.
  • Competency in gas and arc welding is mandatory.
  • Basic supervisory experience.
  • A valid Code 10 driver’s license with a PrDP.
